Where the questions come from

Every question is written by hand and stored with its answer attached. There are currently 536 of them across 19 grammar skills, each tagged with the grade range it suits. When you press a button, the site draws from that bank — it does not ask a language model to invent questions.

That is a deliberate trade. A model could produce endless questions, but it also produces answer keys that are quietly wrong, and a wrong answer key on a worksheet is worse than no worksheet. A fixed bank is smaller and slower to grow. It is also reviewable — every item can be read, argued with and corrected, which is why a report of a wrong answer gets fixed ahead of everything else. Hand-written does not mean infallible; it means the mistakes are findable.

How a sheet is put together

1. 1. Filter by grade. Only questions written for the grade you picked are eligible, so a second grader never gets a subjunctive mood question.
2. 2. Draw round-robin. If you tick three skills, the sheet takes from each in turn, so no one skill fills the page.
3. 3. Group by task. Questions are then grouped so one set of directions covers a whole section — circle the answer, write the word, fix the sentence.
4. 4. Number and print. Each sheet carries an id taken from what is actually on it — the heading and every question, in order. Two printouts showing the same id are the same sheet, which is what you want when a class set gets printed in two batches, and it stays true even after a question has been corrected.

Printing and PDFs

“Print / Save as PDF” opens your browser’s own print dialog. Choosing your printer prints it; choosing “Save as PDF” as the destination saves a PDF file. The controls, the navigation and the footer are all removed from the printed page automatically, and the answer key starts on a new sheet of paper.

The answer key only prints when it is showing on screen, so hide it before you print a set for students.

Using these in a classroom

Print and photocopy as many as you need for your own students, at school or at home. Please do not repackage the sheets for sale or republish them as your own material.

Scope and limitations

The bank covers grades 1 to 8. First grade and eighth grade have fewer questions than the middle grades, simply because fewer skills belong at those levels. There is no way to save a sheet to an account, because there are no accounts.
