Commas: the rules these questions test

Separate items in a list
We bought apples, bread, and cheese. The comma before "and" is the serial comma — some teachers require it, some drop it. Pick one and stay consistent.
Dates and places
She was born on June 4, 2015. They moved to Austin, Texas, last spring — note the comma after the state as well as before it.
After an introductory element
After the game, we went out for pizza. When the bell rang, everyone stood up. Yes, I finished the reading.
Around the name of the person spoken to
Marcus, can you hand me that book? And the famous one: Let's eat, Grandma.
Before a joining word linking two full sentences
The sky darkened, and the wind picked up. But not when one subject does two things: She opened the box and pulled out a scarf.
Around information you could remove
My oldest brother, who lives in Ohio, is visiting. If the clause tells you which one, it is essential and takes no commas: The book that I borrowed is overdue.

Questions parents and teachers ask

Should we use the Oxford comma?
The answer key includes it, because most US school texts do. If your child's teacher marks it as an error, note the exception when you go through the key — the rest of each answer is unaffected.
When are commas taught?
Letter greetings and closings in second grade, lists and addresses in third, dialogue in fourth, introductory elements and tag questions in fifth, nonessential clauses in sixth, and coordinate adjectives in seventh.
What is a coordinate adjective?
Two adjectives that could swap places or take "and" between them: a long, boring meeting. If they cannot swap — an old wool coat — no comma. Those questions appear at seventh and eighth grade.
