Prepositions: the rules these questions test

A prepositional phrase runs from the preposition to its noun: on the counter, with the red collar, for twenty minutes. The noun at the end is the object of the preposition.
The subject is never inside a prepositional phrase: Cross out "of books" in "The stack of books is heavy" and the subject — stack — is what is left. This one trick fixes most agreement errors.
At a time, on a day, in a month: at six o'clock, on Friday, in March. This is the set English learners and native speakers alike get wrong most often.
Between is for two, among is for more: Split the snack between the two of you. She found her keys among the couch cushions.
